Benefits of exercise too great not to do it!
Why should you exercise regularly?
Studies have shown that exercise reduces anxiety and stress. If you are feeling anxious and stressed, moderate exercise can reduce the amount of stress and anxiety you are feeling. A brisk walk, to a light jog for about 20 minutes will do wonders for you stress and anxiety. Studies show that immediately after exercising, people feel less stressed and anxious.
Exercise helps prevent depression. While depressed, exercise will give some temporary relief from depression as the endorphins and dopamines and other “feel good” chemicals are released into the body. The effects for immediate relief of depression are not as high as they are for stress and anxiety. However, exercise has been shown to make a significant reduction in the amount of depressive episodes a person experiences. In other words, consistent exercise helps to keep you from getting depressed in the first place. It is a preventative measure.
Exercise helps to prevent heart disease (which can lead to heart attacks), stoke, type II diabetes, certain cancers, boost immunity, reduce the number of common colds, and obesity related complications to mention a few.
Exercise strengthens bone density making you less susceptible to osteoporosis, as well as less vulnerable to injury.
Exercise helps you to look better which increases self confidence and self esteem. When you feel better about yourself, you attitude is better. So you look better, and act better. This cannot hurt in attracting someone of the opposite sex.
Being in shape encourages you to try things you would not have tried before such as running in a race, or hiking a trail with your kids, or taking bike rides, or participating in a back yard volleyball game. It helps you to experience more of what life has to offer.
Being in shape increases your chances of survivability. Whether you diagnosed with a disease, get into some kind of accident, or find yourself stranded in the wilderness, being in shape increases your chances of surviving life threatening situations for obvious reasons. Your immune systems is stronger. Your muscle and skeletal systems are stronger, and your aerobic capacity is stronger.
People who are in shape tend to recover more quickly from accidents, colds, injuries etc., for the same reasons as listed above.
Exercise has been proven to increase the quality of sleep and sleep duration.
Exercise has been proven to increase energy levels.
Exercise has been proven to extend the life span. In other words, it helps you to live longer and gives you a better quality of life, helping you to stay out of wheelchairs and so on as you age.
So let’s recap. Exercise can help reduce the affects of mental issues and help prevent them. Exercise is one of the primary components of disease prevention. It makes you feel better about yourself and makes you look better. It decreases your chances of injury and increases your chances of survivability. It helps you to sleep and gives you more energy. It increases your life span and gives you a better quality of life.
So why people would not make exercise a regular part of their life is beyond me. If you cant afford a gym, you can still walk briskly, jog, bike, swim, do strength training exercises with your body weight such as pushups, sit ups and other exercises. If you can afford a gym, not only do your choices of exercises and strength training options dramatically increase, you are motivated by seeing others work out as well. Plus it is a great place to meet healthy minded individuals.
If you CHOOSE not to exercise, you are CHOOSING to be less healthy and possibly shorten your life span. For something so important, it would seem to me that people would quit making the usual excuses such as “I don’t have time, I don’t like it, I can’t afford a gym”, and so on and find a way to make it happen.
I will be writing more on the topic including ways to find the time and ways to make exercise more enjoyable. If you want to truly live, exercise should be a regular part of your life.
